Groundwater quality is of great public interest these days. Unfortunately groundwater can easily become contaminated in various ways:
- from the ground surface (by infiltration of polluted surface water, spills, waste dumps, tailings facilities, airborne particles, agricultural activities, etc.),
- from above the water table (leaks in pipelines or underground storage tanks, leachates from landfills, cemeteries, etc.),
- or from below the water table (mines, drainage wells, canals, groundwater withdrawal, etc.)
